Off-track garage door and cable repair in Franklin, Tennessee

If the door hangs crooked, binds on one side or shows a gap at the edge, stop using it. It has left its track or lost a cable, and it could drop.

What to do now

  1. Stop the door where it is

Do not press the wall button again. A motor pushing a twisted door can bend the track further and damage the opener.

  2. Keep people and cars clear

A door hanging on one side can drop without warning. Nobody should stand or park under it.

  3. Do not pull the release to get a car out yet

Pulling it on a damaged door can let the door fall. Read the page on a car stuck inside first.

  4. Describe what you see

Tell the contractor which side dropped, whether a cable looks loose and whether the track looks bent.

Reasonable to note

  • Photograph the door and both tracks from a safe distance.
  • Note whether the opener was running when it happened.
  • Look for a bent track edge or a roller on the floor.

Not for a homeowner

  • Forcing a roller back into the track.
  • Loosening bolts on the track brackets or the cable drums.
  • Lifting the door by hand.

How it happens

Rollers ride inside a steel track on each side. If one pops out, that corner drops and the door twists. A car clipping the door, a slack cable and a bent track are the common causes.

Cables run from the bottom corners up to the springs. When a cable slips off its drum, that side loses lift and the door tilts. The springs may still be holding full tension, which is why this is not a job to try yourself.

What the repair involves

A contractor will usually secure the door, check the track for bends, reset or replace rollers and re-seat or replace the cable. A badly bent track may be replaced.

Ask whether the repair also covers the bottom brackets, which hold the cable ends. A worn bracket can put the door off track again.

Cost depends on how many parts were damaged and how heavy the door is. If the panels have buckled, replacing the door may make more sense than straightening it.
